    Introduction - Getting a Boat Loan

    One of the first things family members should do when they have decided they want to get a boat is sit down and talk about it. Sharing ideas and asking questions is a very important part of the boat-buying process. An equally important part of this discussion should be making sure that the boat of your dreams is a boat you can afford. Without a loan, not many families, even those with two good incomes, can afford more than the basics when it comes to buying a fishing boat, a ski boat or a pontoon boat.

    If you and your family have taken this critical first step, you should be ready to shop seriously for a boat and for a loan.

    Basically, there are two ways to get started. When you are considering a new boat, visit three or more boat retailers and talk with friends and family who have boat experience. This may get you to the point where you write down the kind of boat you want, with all the extras. Make this your purchase plan, along with all the numbers and information you gathered from boat suppliers and other sources.

    If you are looking at a good used boat, from a dealer or an individual, do some research to get values for half a dozen similar boats, with the same accessories and trailer if possible.

    Let’s assume you have decided on a nice ski/fishing boat that is not specially designed for one activity or the other, but will do both nicely. Setting a top price that you can afford should involve at least two options: inboard motor or outboard motor. This will have a huge effect on the amount of money you will spend and on the style of boat you finally get. Be sure to include a quality trailer, hitch and all the necessary safety equipment in your price.

    Now you may be ready to buy the fishing boat, ski boat or pontoon boat you have always dreamed about. So, where does the money come from? If you are in the majority at this point, you will have to get some of the money, if not most of it, from a bank or other lender.

    But as one experienced boater said, this should not be a major worry. Thousands of banks and other lending sources want your business. If you are careful in your selection and follow all the steps, you may not even have to actually visit a bank in person. Shopping for a loan is just as important as shopping for the boat.

    Before looking specifically at boat loans, let’s take a minute to understand loans in general, and define a few terms.
